Crowns and Bridges

Crowns – Have you ever wondered what a Crown or a Dental Cap actually is?

Over time teeth become weakened, which could be due to a filling breaking, or root canal treatment, it is vital to protect the remaining tooth structure. A crown is designed to fit over the remaining part of the prepared tooth and help to strengthen the tooth again.

There are many types of crowns and depends on which is best for you and your lifestyle in terms of strength and longevity. This would all be discussed at the exam appointment, the crowns have two appointments. The first is a long appointment where the tooth structure is reduced down and prepared for the impression. You are then fitted with a temporary crown while your crown is prepared at a laboratory. Two weeks later you return for the fitting of the crown and any adjustments that are needed.

Bridges are a structure between two crowns to fill a gap between missing teeth.

Like crowns, there are different types of Bridges depending on your needs: Traditional Bridges – involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic (replacement tooth) in between. Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. Cantilever bridges – are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. These are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to your existing teeth.

Bridges are prepared in the same way a crown is, the teeth on either side are shaped and the impression will taken on your first appointment. A temporary bridge is placed and a second appointment will be made two weeks later for a permanent fitting. Exceptional Crowns and Bridges in Leek, uncompromised quality at budget-friendly rates.
